Unveiled by Appletree Surfboards at the Foil Festival in Germany, the near-production version of the Radix system—developed in collaboration with Core—aims to replace traditional twin-track systems with a streamlined single-track design.

By combining the continuous fore-and-aft adjustability of standard tracks with the low-drag hydrodynamics and exceptional structural stiffness of a Tuttle box, Radix solves the major drawbacks of legacy hardware. The system utilizes auto-twisting T-nuts attached directly to the mast foot, which eliminates loose hardware, entry holes, and the risk of losing components.

Traditional dual US box tracks present noticeable hydrodynamic drag, turbulence, and structural flex at the hull connection. The Radix concept replaces dual-track setups with a single, tapered track to address several performance and practical issues simultaneously:

  • Hydrodynamics & Speed: Eliminating the wide mounting base creates a smoother hull profile, reducing resistance to yield faster taxiing speeds, earlier lift, and better low-end performance.
  • Direct Power Transfer: The single-track design provides a stiffer connection with direct load transfer between the board and mast.
  • Weight & Simplicity: Eliminating bulky mast pedestals makes the system lighter, cleaner, and less complex to manufacture.

A tapered preload fit ensures that tightening just two bolts draws the mast into a rigid, unified connection with the board, while integrated top flanges prevent overtensioning. Beyond its operational ease, Radix removes the need for heavy mast pedestal plates, resulting in lighter, cheaper, and simpler mast manufacturing.

To establish Radix as a widespread industry standard, Appletree is offering the internal track boxes to outside board builders while sharing the engineering specifications for Radix-certified masts free of charge. Early adopters can utilize adapters from partners like Cedrus to connect existing modular masts, positioning Radix for broader market adoption and potential retrofitting solutions in upcoming model years.

Redefining Installation Mechanics

The Radix system introduces a single-track layout designed to streamline mast attachment and removal:

  • Two-Bolt Operation: Mounting and demounting require adjusting only two bolts.
  • Auto-Twisting T-Nuts: Connected directly to the mast foot, the T-nuts eliminate separate hardware handling, remove the need for track entry holes, and prevent hardware loss.
  • Tapered Preload Fit: A subtle initial gap under the mast foot closes under tension, creating a preloaded single-unit connection with high structural rigidity.
  • Overtension Prevention: Integrated flanges top out flush against the board deck to prevent over-tightening.

Overcoming Traditional Box Limitations

While Tuttle boxes offer high stiffness and minimal drag—making them popular for racing and downwind foiling—they present significant practical drawbacks. Standard Tuttle systems offer only fixed positions, require board-specific screw lengths driven through the deck, and carry a risk of cross-threading.

The Radix system addresses these constraints by combining a drag-reducing profile with continuous fore-and-aft adjustability. By shifting structural reinforcement into the board’s internal box design, the system simplifies mast manufacturing:

  • Eliminates bulky mast pedestal plates.
  • Reduces mast production complexity and cost.
  • Lowers overall mast weight.

Industry Adoption and Open Standard Model

Rather than keeping the technology exclusive to Appletree Surfboards, the Radix system is being offered as an open standard to drive broader industry adoption. Appletree supplies the proprietary track boxes to manufacturing partners while providing open-access manufacturing specifications for brands to design compatible, Radix-certified masts.

Initial commercial rollout includes partner solutions and backward-compatibility initiatives:

  • Cedrus Compatibility: Mast manufacturer Cedrus is developing adapter bases to allow existing Cedrus masts and connected foil planes to interface directly with Radix tracks.
  • Production Timeline: Initial retail availability is targeted for upcoming model years, with the long-term goal of establishing Radix as a dominant mounting standard by 2030.
  • Adaptation Options: Development is ongoing for retrofitting options, including potential dual-mount board designs featuring both twin tracks and Radix boxes during the transition period.
