Foiling Week, the event for all things hydrofoiling, is set return to Malcesine, Lake Garda, Italy, for its highly anticipated 12th edition. Scheduled from June 22nd to June 29th, 2025, this water sports and innovation foiling event promises an exceptional lineup of racing, educational initiatives, and social gatherings.
It is embracing the broader spectrum of foiling sports by featuring the SFT – Surf Foil World Tour, which includes the exhilarating E-Foil and Pump Foil categories. This collaboration highlights the rapid evolution and growing popularity of foil boarding disciplines.
The 12th edition of Foiling Week Malcesine is set to be a vibrant hub for the international foiling community. Over 400 participants are expected to converge on Lake Garda, including Olympic medalists, America’s Cup and SailGP stars, and long-time champions. The event is more than just a regatta; it’s a comprehensive experience that blends high-octane racing with opportunities for learning, networking, and celebrating the future of sailing.
More than just a series of races, Foiling Week Malcesine is an immersive experience designed to foster learning, facilitate invaluable networking, and collectively celebrate the exhilarating advancements shaping the future of sailing. The event’s overarching social theme, #regeneration, underscores a profound commitment to addressing the climate crisis through a holistic approach that integrates biodiversity, human dignity, justice, and actionable climate solutions, making it a truly forward-thinking and impactful assembly.
Since its first edition in 2014, Foiling Week has placed a strong focus on environmental sustainability. This year, themed around #regeneration, will feature lakebed cleaning activities on Lake Garda, organised by Foiling Week in partnership with the Biodesign Foundation.
At the end of Foiling Week, on June 30th and July 1st, The Foiling Organization will host the inaugural Foiling Sport Congress at the same venue. The congress aims to bring together federations, classes, event organizers, yacht clubs, coaches, athletes, and industry leaders to discuss the future of competitive foiling. Attendance is by invitation only. Those with relevant projects or ideas can write to: secretary@wearefoiling.com
There will be five primary racing classes, along with board categories. Here’s a closer look at each:
- Moth: The International Moth is a highly advanced, single-handed hydrofoil dinghy. Known for its incredible speed and highly technical nature, modern Moths are constructed from carbon fiber and can exceed speeds of 30 knots. It’s a development class, meaning there’s continuous innovation in its design, attracting top-tier sailors and engineers who push the boundaries of performance.
- WASZP: Designed to be accessible, fun, and fast, the WASZP is a popular one-design foiling dinghy. It’s renowned for its user-friendliness, making it a great entry point for those new to foiling while still offering exhilarating performance for experienced sailors. Its emphasis on safety and a high fun factor has contributed to its rapid growth in popularity.
- Switch One Design: This is a one-design class that offers sailors the thrill of foiling in a full carbon composite, state-of-the-art dinghy. Being a one-design class, it ensures fair competition as all boats are identical, placing the emphasis squarely on the skill of the sailor. It provides a high-performance foiling experience in a controlled environment.
- BirdyFish: The BirdyFish is a foiling dinghy conceptualized to make foiling more approachable for newcomers. It’s designed to be stable and safe while still delivering the sensations of flight, quick acceleration, and high speeds. It features self-regulating J-foils that contribute to its stability and lift. Foiling Week will feature both the double-handed and the new “S” single-handed model, which recently received the Foiling Award for Best Production Sailing Boat.
- ETF26: Conceived by Jean-Pierre Dick and designed by Guillaume Verdier, the ETF26 is a 26-foot catamaran built for high-speed racing and exceptional performance. It’s known for its ability to adapt to a range of weather conditions, performing well in winds from 8 to 20 knots and capable of speeds 2.5 times the wind speed.
- E-Foil: Electric hydrofoil boards that allow riders to “fly” above the water with electric propulsion, offering an accessible and exciting foiling experience without requiring wind or waves.
- Pump Foil: A discipline where riders use body movements (pumping) to generate lift and maintain speed on a hydrofoil board, often without external propulsion, emphasizing technique and endurance.
